Keeping up with new technology

Especially in this day and age, it can be tough to keep track of all the technology that comes out and what each gadget does. It seems as though new products or services are released every few months, and busy accountants don't have the time to sift through all the reviews to see if any of the tech will benefit the firm in a positive way. While it is part of the duty as a manager to suggest innovative changes to the office, there isn't enough time in the day to get everything done and scan the Internet for new technology.

A pervasive problem
Feeling behind the times when it comes to technology is not a problem that only affects a few managers in some firms across the country. According to CPA Practice Advisor, staying up-to-date with technology is a serious issue for offices from coast to coast. A recent survey by Robert Half Management Resources reported that 58 percent of CFO respondents noted "keeping pace with changing technology" as the greatest pressure that they face.

It's fascinating to think that professionals who have so much on their proverbial plate worry so much about being left behind and out of touch with current technology. As accountants, there are so many rules and regulations that need to be followed - and even more around tax season - that gadgets and gizmos shouldn't necessarily be the top concern in the firm.

Lessening the load
Since it's quite apparent that CFOs feel a certain pressure to keep up with technology, the best case might be to have technology work to their advantage. There are many applications and software services that can help streamline the daily processes of a given manager, and it might just free up enough time to give them the room they need to stay on top of the tech game.

AccountingWEB suggested that firms should use automated client messages to cut back on time spent drafting emails or phone calls to each individual customer. Time is better spent on issues that are sensitive and require direct attention, reminding everyone to file a certain form on a specific day doesn't necessarily call for a personalized message. Push notifications or text alerts also keep people thinking about your brand, regardless of what device they happen to be utilizing.

The world of technology doesn't have to be a pain point for accounting firms anymore. Instead, tech should work for you and not on your nerves.
